Small sighting errors are one of the most common reasons shots land off target. The fix is simple: get your sight alignment and sight picture correct, and make the front sight the center of your focus. What proper sight alignment looks like
Sight alignment is the relationship between the front sight and the rear sight. When aligned correctly you should see:
- The top of the front sight even with the top of the rear sight.
- The front sight centered left-to-right in the rear sight notch.
- The front sight in sharp focus while the target and rear sight are slightly blurred.
Sight picture is the front sight placed on the target where you want the bullet to impact. Focus on the front sight and place that focused image on the target—this is the visual control that produces consistent hits.
Quick checklist before you press the trigger
- Grip and stance stable and repeatable.
- Front and rear sights aligned (top and sides).
- Front sight in focus; target slightly soft.
- Breath controlled, natural respiratory pause.
- Smooth, straight trigger press.
Common sighting problems and how to fix them
1. Shots consistently high
Often the front sight is visually above where it should be in the rear notch relative to the target. The shooter will say the sights are aligned because they can see the front sight, but it is actually sitting too high in relation to the target.
Fix: Lower the muzzle slightly so the front sight moves down in the rear notch until the top of the front sight aligns with the rear and the front sight sits on the intended point of impact.
2. Sights look “aligned” but shots miss
A common coaching trick is to use an occlusion test: place your finger or another small object in the sight picture (close to the target line) and ask the shooter whether they can see the front sight in relation to that object. If their front sight is hidden by the object, they need to lower their sights until the front sight is visible beneath it. This quickly shows whether the sight picture is sitting too high or too low on the actual target—without relying on the shooter’s verbal claim that they “see the sights.”
3. Speed versus focus
When shooters rush, their attention drifts from the front sight to the target. That causes inconsistent POI (point of impact). Prioritize the front sight. You can still shoot rapidly, but train the eyes to snap back to the front sight during trigger press.
Simple dry-fire drill to reinforce correct sight picture
- Assume your normal shooting grip and stance with an unloaded firearm.
- Pick a small target spot on the wall or an aim card.
- Align rear sight and front sight so the top of the front sight is level with the rear and centered left to right.
- Focus on the front sight; place it on the target spot.
- Squeeze the trigger smoothly while keeping the front sight in focus. Reset and repeat 20 times with deliberate attention to the sight picture.
- Record any consistent drift in your sight picture (high, low, left, right) and adjust grip or sight alignment until corrected.
Sight types and what to watch for
Different sights offer different visual cues, but the fundamentals stay the same:
- Three-dot sights (typical M&P): Align the three dots horizontally—rear dots level with front dot centered.
- Standard Glock sights: Smaller front sight can be harder to pick up; slow down and ensure the top of the front sight is level with the rear.
- Competition or colored front sights: Colored/contrasting front sights aid fast acquisition. Still focus on the front sight and align it with the rear notch.
Tips for coaches and range partners
- You often cannot stand directly behind a shooter. Observe muzzle direction and note if it is pointed high or low relative to the target.
- If shots are high, ask the shooter to slowly lower the sights until the shot group moves toward the target. Make adjustments in small increments.
- Use the occlusion test: temporarily place your finger or a small marker in the sight line to help the shooter see where the front sight should sit relative to the target.
- Encourage dry-fire work focusing solely on sight alignment and front-sight focus. Most improvements come from repetition and visual discipline, not more ammo.
